When to Leave How to Leave Safety announcements

   Personal Safety

If you are living with an abusive partner, the following guidelines may help keep you safe. The safest thing for you and your children is to leave as soon as it is safe to do so.

Have important telephone numbers and identification with you at all times. Ask for toll-free numbers that can be used free from any payphone.

Let people know about the abuse and ask them to contact you regularly. If they are unable to contact you, ask them to call the police.

Teach your children how to call for help. Teach your children never to come between you and your partner during a fight.

Teach your children a code word to use if there is danger.

If an argument has started, move to a room free of all potential weapons (kitchens, bathrooms, and workshops hold many materials that could do damage). Try to move to a room that has an exit.

Keep your car backed into the driveway so that you can get out quickly and easily.
